Partitioning HD

Hello,

my first time here on this forum.
I'd like to put a linux-distro on my mac [ppc] and read something about it..but something is not sure to me.
I've got 2 partitions on my mac, a system and data, and I want to put linux on the system disk.
is it still possible to keep my data partition on my mac? or will the whole HD be formatted while installing linux?
if yes, is there a way to go around this? or have both systems running
